Why Is Snow White?
Snow White Snow, the white stuff, without it there’d be no white christmas, or white blanket, but why do a few clear (translucent) ice crystals bunched together look white at all? We all know the basics of visual color perception; light frequencies travel around and run into things causing them to be absorbed, scattered, or pass right through.

Collaborative Test Database
One of the most exciting things about working for Symbian is that its model enables a wider variety of contributions than source code. Contributions of all forms are valuable, including words (in the form of discussions in the various forums and Ideas site etc) but also test effort. There are many areas of platform testing that are resource-intensive and common between companies, for example interoperability testing and multimedia playability testing. Therefore one of the specific ideas we have been working towards is a web database to enable community memebers to coordinate testing efforts and collaborate. This will help reduce R&D time and costs for everyone.

Which Teaching Method Is Right For You?

Authorial Practice
This was the theme of an illustration conference I attended on Thursday and, to be honest, it took me a while to work out what was meant by it. Perhaps a more straight-forward term might be ‘artistic integrity’, because the conference revolved around the extent to which illustrators, whose work is by definition commissioned and art-directed by a client, can maintain their own ‘voice’ within the work they produce and to what extent we need to sustain private, non-commissioned work, to keep sight of who we are as creatives. There were two illustrators speaking: Simon Spilsbury , whose work you will remember from the recent Cobra ads, and Andrew Foster , who caused some controversy with his commission to paint the windows at Liberty (top image).

Where Canada and Mississippi Meet
Canada Type ’s Tupelo , an extremely fluid connecting script, is a sort of synethsis of Austrian formal calligraphy – circa mid 18th century – and two specific individuals’ handwriting. Designer Philip Bouwsma credits the scripts of Elvis Presley and Abraham Lincoln, each of which shared a common ancestor in a specific writing system, with the face’s genesis; certainly the writing system those two historical figures learned in grade school figures prominently in this. Tupelo Pro includes over 840 characters, which includes swash caps, stylistic alternates, beginning and ending figures and oldstyle numerals.
