NeubauLaden Fonts Austrian born, Berlin based designer Stefan Gandl formed Neubau in 2001 before taking the world by storm with the release of two bestselling books “Neubau Welt” (2005) and “Neubau Modul” (2007). In 2008 Neubau exhibited “Neubauism” a perspicacious, kinetic journey through the world of Neubau opened by legendary designer Wim Crouwel in the Netherlands. Taking a cue from Crouwel’s grid-play and the modernist spirit of the Bauhaus school, Gandl creates alphabets that defy traditional typographic conventions and celebrate the stark, imperfect letters made by machines.

The Right Type of Education
I’ve been a fan of Billy Baumann’s work (and that of his partner at Delicious Design League , Jason Teegarden-Downs) ever since I first discovered him on Gigposters ; his posters always combine hand-lettering, images and type in novel ways. As you can see, Billy tends to use a pretty restricted type palette; however, he writes that when he was first getting started, T-26 really helped form his conception of display type, and that he still admires them very much

Here’s Sudtipos ’ newest font, Sinfonieta – another collaboration between calligrapher Angel Koziupa and type designer Alejandro Paul – to illustrate how perfectly their scripts complement packaging design, and specifically food packaging. Александра Королькова – also known as Alexandra Korolkova – studied under ParaType’s Alexander Tarbeev and is now a type design and calligraphy instructor at various Moscow high schools. This week she brings us three very appealing typefaces as part of her MyFonts debut: Gorodets is a set of 60 hand-traced folk images from Russian woodcut art (specifically, the art of the town of Gorodets, near Nizhniy Novgorod on the Volga, about 400km east of Moscow), and is an excellent companion to many traditional European calligraphic scripts and perfect for wedding invitations and similarly formal projects when a bit of decoration is needed. Her second and third releases are actually much more than just a single font; each is a full family in its own right: Leksa Sans , is a slightly-stressed humanist sans in a variety of weights (each with accompanying italics)

Top Ten Spooky Fonts
Metroscript Virtually years in the making, Metroscript is an outgrowth of a lettering style that Doret has used in his design work dozens of times, usually for connecting words such as “and the”, “from”, etc. This style has been described as a “baseball” or “sports” script — which is true — but its applicability is really much wider than that. Created in OpenType, Metroscript is chock full of features that will expand its usability, such as: 6 different tail styles with variable lengths; letters that “know” when they’re at the beginning or at the end of a word or following a certain other letter — and change accordingly; plus literally dozens of stylistic alternates, swashes, and ligatures, all fitting together in a way that makes each word seem as if it was lettered by hand.

Characteristically humble, Okay Type ’s Alright Sans is the first release from young Brooklyn designer Jackson Cavanaugh . Improbably well-balanced, attractive and clean (and loaded: small caps, multiple sets of numerals, ligatures, fractions, etc.) for a freshman effort, the face is surely proof of Cavanaugh’s having been possessed by the ghost of Paul Renner – or perhaps simply that he knows his stuff, and studied briefly with Peter Bilak, Richard Niessen, and the folks at Underware, as well as the excellent design faculty at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. To suggest that Alright is Cavanaugh’s first typeface, though, is not quite honest; it’s his first made for public consumption, but he’s done quite a bit of custom type design work for private clients, and as a participant in Rick Valicenti’s Playground Projects , he designed Masticor, a “fun (and disturbing)” OpenType font where the glyphs bounce around and vary as the user enters text

Way More Than Alright
Neil Summerour – known primarily as a designer of modernist display type and scripts – has shown he is equally deft with body text, in Organic , his first sans since last April’s similarly successful Akagi . This very flexible and legible slightly-stressed humanist sans becomes even more useful with the additions of extensive alternates, small caps, oldstyle figures and a number of traditional (and some unexpected) ligatures. The gradually increasing width of the five weights make this useful family terrific for text, and in bolder forms, display settings as well

By Elliot Jay Stocks When Johno first asked me to write about Typekit , I jumped at the chance. I’d received a beta invite to try out the service about a week before, but deadlines had got in the way of actually getting round to it. Now I had the perfect excuse to have a proper play, create a test site, and immerse myself in the technology that got the web design community frothing at the mouth when it was announced a couple of months ago.

Changing the line spacing in your document can have a dramatic effect on the how your page will look, whether it’s a Microsoft Word document, a PowerPoint presentation or a Web page. The term ‘linespacing’ has now superseded what used to be known in typographic terms as leading .

The Courier typeface , designed by Howard “Bud” Kettler , has an interesting history which has been discussed in other places so I won’t cover that here. But, a question that sometimes gets asked is why the Courier New font that ships with Windows is so thin? The Courier typeface was originally designed by IBM for their typewriters .
