I was sad to hear that my new friend and fellow illustrator, Cassia Thomas , is imminently deserting The North and disappearing Down South . Shame on her! Actually there are perfectly good reasons, which is why friends forgave her sufficiently to get together in Manchester this week, partly because we fancied supping some mulled wine and pottering through the markets, but also as a kind of send-off. Though the others were all fresh-faced, disgustingly young, up-and-coming writers and illustrators, they were polite enough to affect not to notice the old bird nudging her way in, and a good time was had by all

Good Luck Cassia!
This was the theme of an illustration conference I attended on Thursday and, to be honest, it took me a while to work out what was meant by it. Perhaps a more straight-forward term might be ‘artistic integrity’, because the conference revolved around the extent to which illustrators, whose work is by definition commissioned and art-directed by a client, can maintain their own ‘voice’ within the work they produce and to what extent we need to sustain private, non-commissioned work, to keep sight of who we are as creatives. There were two illustrators speaking: Simon Spilsbury , whose work you will remember from the recent Cobra ads, and Andrew Foster , who caused some controversy with his commission to paint the windows at Liberty (top image).

I wasn’t sure what to wear for the Hachette party on Wednesday, but in the end I decided to dress up (there are not enough opportunities these days), so I wore my red, spotty, dancing dress (several people said I looked like a ladybird). No heels though – far too many hours of standing! I felt a bit over-dressed getting on the train at 11am though, and wouldn’t you just know it: I was sitting opposite a nun.
Cover for Bookmarks Magazine Daniel has several new pieces posted on his website after a very busy fall. Most notably is the new cover for Bookmarks magazine – available at Borders and Barnes & Noble now . Bookmarks had previously only used stock imagery and this is their first foray into using an illustrator. They were very happy with the results and more covers are planned for 2010. Purchase a copy while you are out Christmas shopping and reinforce that custom illustration sells better than stock. Also, for the holiday season, Daniel has made available three adorable prints through his CafePress store . The prints are affordable for almost any budget. Give a unique gift of art this Christmas (or buy one for yourself

Well, it’s been a very busy week for travelling – I clocked up 9 hours in the last 2 days. I took a train down to Reading on Wednesday afternoon, but unfortunately had an awful seat for drawing purposes (very high-backed seats and only back views, mainly of people’s knees!) so I read my Ian Rankin novel instead. I did these sketches on the way home the next evening
