All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth

This is the season of giving, whether it is for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or just to exchange gifts. So, with so many people here self-employed and thus lacking a company to give out those turkey dinners, terrific bonuses, and whatnot; I thought it would be a great idea to provide a list of real and fantasy gifts that would be perfect for the freelancer in your family, even if it is yourself. The Perfect Gift For Every Freelancer A Matched Set of Angel and Devil ‘lancers: Set the “Devil ‘lancer” on one shoulder to tell you what you should be saying to that client that wants five more changes in two days and then doesn’t give you the materials until the day they want the job done

Dick’s Sporting Goods Driving Social Media with Email

Last week I found a great example of a really unobtrusive way to use email marketing as a way to drive traffic to social media . The email came from Dick’s Sporting Goods . It was a simple, well-designed email that had a very simple call to action: Follow us on Twitter and receive an exclusive discount code : Why it’s good Dick’s did a good job of using a traditional tool – email marketing – to drive traffic to one of those shiny new social media tools – twitter .  What a lot of marketers overlook is that having a good social media presence isn’t just setting up post at each outlet and waiting for people to find you

RefreshWeb SEO Dashboard

Founder and CEO John Rasco provided me with a sneak peek demonstration of an incredible Software as a Service (SaaS) SEO dashboard a few weeks ago and now RefreshWeb is going live to the masses with their new SEO dashboard. RefreshWeb first built the application out of frustration for their own clients since they could not easily get a complete look at all the dimensions of keyword targeted-search engine marketing. There are three important elements of search engine tracking… the volume of searches per keyword, your current rank and volumes (and relative share), and your historical rank (whether you’re gaining or losing ground)

Consumer New Media Usage Study Released

A headline this morning on a press release about the 2009 Cone Consumer New Media Study reads, “Four-out-of-Five New Media Users Interact with Companies and Brands Online, up 32% from 2008.” This isn’t so much shocking news as it is confirmation of what we marketers already logically believe. If you’re online, you probably want to interact with the brands you’re buying in some way. Mike Hollywood, Cone`s director of new media, is quoted in the release, “There is still an opportunity for forward-thinking companies to establish a presence and earn a competitive advantage.

Does domain age matter?

Within the last year Google has finally gone on record to comment on the significance of a domain name’s age and how it affects rankings in search engines. The most recent instance occurred when Matt Cutts addressed this in the GoogleWebmasterHelp YouTube channel back in May: Cutts also provided a similar glimmer of insight earlier in the year when he said: To the best of my knowledge, no search engine has ever confirmed that they use length-of-registration as a factor in scoring.

New Google Chrome Beta is Faster

Our main complaint with the existing Google Chrome browser was the occasional (and unexplainable) lag during start up and while browsing. We found it to be enough of an irritation that everyone in the office returned to FireFox or Internet Explorer. The new beta release may change those choices: According to Google engineers, the latest “beta release shows over 30% improvement on both the V8 and SunSpider benchmarks over our current stable channel release.” It’s hard to scoff at a measurable gain of 30%.

SEO and Social Media Don’t Mix

Given the immense growth of social media sites over the past six years and the importance of link building in search engine marketing, it’s not surprising that one common and flawed question continues to come up every few months: “How much of an effect do social media sites have in determining our website’s visibility and PageRank?” The simplest answer is: little to none. Generally speaking the largest social networking and social bookmarking sites provide very little utility when it comes to link building. While many sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Del.icio.us, YouTube and even Flickr once allowed unfettered direct linking, nowadays many social media sites have been obfuscating off-site links with page forwards, frames, and the more common “nofollow” anchor tag restriction.

What Kind of Moron Would Shoot a Swan?

This post is certainly not technology related, but I cannot help but wonder about the thought process of some people. According to a report from Wilmington NC television station WECT , some residents are saying that hunters are shooting Swans in Hewlett’s Creek.  These Swans are the kind that children feed with bread crumbs, in some cases they will eat right out of your hand.  Shooting an animal like that is wrong on so many levels: The animal does not fear humans and so cannot distinguish the threat.  So they are not really “hunting”, are they? It is illegal to shoot animals in Wilmington City Limits.
